A few weeks ago I was fortunate to bring a bucket list item to fulfillment - Run the Boulder Skyline Traverse - "Boulder's classic long mountain route."
Here are my ultra-brief notes and a 3-minute video. Enjoy!
The Renaissance (post competitive triathlon life) has been great. Here's the summary: Twice the finance work hours, 20% less sleep hours, crossfit daily, running the roads and mountains on the regular, more javas, more brews, more outings with friends, charcoal grilling, days in the mountain backcountry, elk bow season preparation, CFP final requirements, fasting, feasting, cold showers, meteor showers. More detail forthcoming on all of that. Especially fitness, food, finance and elk hunting.
A few weeks ago I was fortunate to bring a bucket list item to fulfillment - Run the Boulder Skyline Traverse. "The classic long mountain route in Boulder". It's a route connecting all of the prominent peaks of the Boulder Front Range - South Boulder Peak, Bear Peak, Green Mountain, Flagstaff Mountain, Mount Sanitas. My route, with a bit of extra distance here and there, was about 20 miles, and taking time to sit and soak it in, was about 6 hours.
-Dropped the truck at the north end of the route, then had a cruisey 6am bike ride to the trailhead south of Boulder.
-Rippin hot sun, immediately.
-Wild raspberries in the 'burn area'
-Dirt, grass, scree, sandstone, pine needle forest floor, and a wee bit of pavement
-2L of water and a few bars is inadequate fuel/hydration for a July Boulder Skyline traverse. But the body and mind are resilient.
-Hiking boots are similar enough to trail running shoes
-4 peaks was good fine fun. At the time, I could have done without the 5th.
-6 hours slipped right by, flew by, on the mountain bike/hike/scramble/run
-Solitude is right there, less than 1 mile west of Boulder proper
-Quiet mind, unoccupied mind. All kinds of good ideas popped up, the thoughts were thoroughly sifted and sorted. Some good reminisces; some regrets to let go of; LOTS of people, things and events to feel gratitude for; lots of time of nothing else but being fullly in the moment.
